Introduction: Science Storymaking

An introduction for educators to KTFR, the concept of science as a storymaking opportunity, and suggestions for how to implement the KTFR curriculum in a classroom.

Episode 1: Sizing Up a Situation

Students take a resilience literacy quiz to gauge their level of disaster preparedness, and learn to notice when there is a weather situation happening.

Episode 2: Drawing Energy In

Students learn how hurricanes form in the tropics and do an activity to learn how to draw a hurricane.

Episode 3: Get Weather Smart

Students learn how to check the weather forecast, the difference between a watch and a warning, and how to interpret weather symbols and graphics.

Episode 4: Get Place Wise

Students learn about conditions that can amplify flooding hazards in their communities and the challenges of coastal stormwater management. They also learn how tides work and how to read a tide chart.

Episode 5: Get Storm Surge Smart

Students learn about the effects of hurricanes and how to interpret the NHC Track Forecast cone. They also learn about storm surge events.

Episode 6: Get Prep Ready

Students learn how to make a family emergency plan, how to use emergency alert apps, and how to prepare to evacuate if necessary.

Episode 7: Get Water Safe

Students learn basic water safety rules, and basic swimming and rescue techniques.

Episode 8: Game On!

Students play a cooperative board game to put hurricane resilience knowledge gained from the KTFR program to the test.

Episode 9: Become a KTFR Ambassador

Students form a team or club to produce media and art related to educating their peers about weather resilience.
